Writing About Writing

How strange it is to look up and discover that the only thing I have to write about today is writing.

Actual, real-time image of my editing process. That’s my longsuffering husband in the background.

The Things I Know

It happened again.

I was doing my daily 1,000 words on Soultainted. Aside from our two-week road trip, I’ve been doing those words pretty much every day. I’m finding that focusing for half an hour or an hour on doing the words seems to wake up my brain. Maybe I’m finally starting to understand why some writers start every day with words…

This meme has nothing to do with my post. It’s just my favorite.

In any case, once again, I was writing along and stumbled onto a fact about a character that I knew as surely as I know that the sun will rise tomorrow. I can’t tell you how I knew. All I can tell you is that this fact was a revelation to some of the characters in the scene, but that as soon as I typed it, I knew it was true in that world.

The Perfection Monster

So I stumbled upon this article today, and to say that it hit home is a bit of an understatement.

I know this is really going to shock most of you… You might want to sit down when I reveal this… You ready? Hold on…

I struggle with perfectionism.

I’ll pause while you all gasp in surprise and recover your faculties.

I’m attempting to re-read Ravenmarked and Bloodbonded in order to avoid continuity issues with Unquickened. I did manage to get through Ravenmarked. This is what it looked like when I was done:

The CrockPot Method

I got an Instant Pot for Christmas.

It only took me about two months to take it out of the box.

Keep in mind–this is a gift I said I wanted at some point in 2018. And my husband remembered that and bought it for me. My friends who had one said it was great for getting food on the table fast on busy days. It seemed like a way to get rid of some of the extra cookware in the kitchen–I wouldn’t need my rice cooker and CrockPot anymore, and maybe I could even ditch the red Dutch oven that I love so much.

My current favorite cooking implement.

Breathing

I just have one question: Why do I not have a massage therapist living in my house?

August has been a challenge around here. This summer has set a record for hot days in the Portland-Metro area–30 or 31, I think. The previous record was in 2015 with 29. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this, but I hate the heat. I hate it. I hate it so much. I understand that sun is a good thing and it’s important and all that, but why does it have to be HOT? So I’ve been sort of melting a lot for two months.

Catching Up

Oh hey there, friends.

I have no idea how I managed to let three months go by without so much as an “I’m still alive” post. It feels like I JUST posted something. I don’t know where the three months went. Suffice to say… I’m still alive.

This spring has been reasonably uneventful. In the general news category….

I bought a new planner.

You guys. It’s so pretty.

I texted my sister last night to make sure I remembered her kids’ birthdays right (yeah, I’m that kind of aunt), and she shared my joy over new planners. I live in a family of office supply addicts. My oldest daughter will work for sticky notes.

Sinkholes of Stupidity

I think I finally reached my breaking point.

I’ve had a love/hate relationship with social media since… well, since I started using social media. I’ve had my moments when I’ve shut it off for one reason or another–sometimes because I needed something different, sometimes because the shouting was just too much to bear–but I think I’ve finally hit the tipping point where I can see nothing useful that comes from having a social media presence.

In my last post, I promised more news, and then when that news happened, I neglected to share it.

Can we blame Thanksgiving?

In any case, the news is this: (more…)
